Katarina started skating ice at the age of five. Her success allowed her to show her talent and gain entry into a Karl-Marx-Stadt special school for gifted kids. It was here that she met her coach Jutta Muller. Witt was able to make her mark by finishing second at the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Her elegance and grace caught the attention of everyone, and from that point ahead she became the dominant figure skater in the competition. Olympic success Katarina (now Witt) was awarded the Figure Skating gold medal at Sarajevo in the Sarajevo Winter Games. Four years later, that she was able to claim an additional tighter race. The free skater was unable to win however she was awarded the gold medal for her figures that were compulsory and her program was short. Witt is the first figure skater female to have won the same event twice since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame After enjoying great success in the field of acting, Witt returned to the sport in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. Though she did not take home a medal, the young woman delighted her fans despite coming in seventh. Witt was named to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by its members in 1995.
